The Yarra Valley holds the distinction of being the oldest wine region in Victoria. Kicking off in 1838, when the first vineyards were planted by the Ryrie brothers of Yering Station, the region has gone from strength to strength. Considered Australia’s premier cool climate wine region, the Yarra Valley is home to fresh, innovative and progressive winemakers. With over 80 vineyards spread out across 9900 acres, there are so many different styles to taste and appreciate. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon are all award-winning varieties produced by the area. However, other varieties are beginning to make their mark as the Yarra Valley diversifies. Look out for Nebbiolo, Savagnin, Sangiovese, Gamay, and Arneis, all highly acclaimed. Never before has the Yarra Valley had so much variety on offer and at such high quality. At just over an hour from Melbourne, it is perfectly located for day tours or a weekend getaway.
