Description
Red Hill Estate was established in 1989 by Sir Peter Derham. Sir Peter was knighted in 1981 for his services to industry, tourism and science. In particular, he is remembered for his support of the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and his preservation and restoration work, including Mawson’s hut in Antarctica. However, around the Mornington Peninsula, he is regarded as a pioneer of sparkling wine. Sir Peter had a clear vision for Red Hill Estate and that vision endures today albeit under the watchful gaze of a different owner.
Today, Red Hill Estate is a 43 acre property, with 23 under vine. Frank Fabrizio in 2012 purchased Red Hill Estate as a component of a larger wine business, Cheviot Bridge. Interestingly, Frank didn’t actually visit the cellar door until 2014. After that day he fell in love with the property and moved from sales and marketing to tending the vines.
The winemaker at Red Hill Estate is Donna Stephens, She has been quoted to say her favourite wine is the Single Vineyard Pinot Noir. Particularly, in her words “It’s delicious, elegant, truly varietal and seductive.”
This stop is included on our wine and cheese tasting tour and, also on an optional visit on our wine tasting tour of the Peninsula.
Restaurant
Max’s at Red Hill Estate enjoys iconic status as the first winery restaurant on the Peninsula. Now, 20 years on, Mornington Peninsula has proven popular with a number of winery restaurants. Max lead the way for the dining scene on the Peninsula.
Max’s at Red Hill Estate sits high on the hill, overlooking the vineyard and out to Westernport Bay and Phillip Island, therefore offering fantastic views to enjoy while dinning. Some of the awards Max’s restaurant has achieved are: the Victorian Tourism Award 2010 & 2011 and Australian Tourism Award in 2010 for Restaurant and Catering Services. Altogether, these accolades prove the restaurant as a worthy destination for dinning. If nothing else, a worthy stop to see the views for yourself. For this reason we love to visit here on our tours.
