Frequently Asked Questions

Wildlife spotting is always a possibility, but it’s not guaranteed — these animals are wild and sometimes they’re simply out of sight. Your guide knows the best areas to look for koalas and kangaroos, and we’ll maximise your chances when conditions allow. For everyone’s safety, we can’t always stop on the roadside for photos.
Yes — it’s a big day, and that’s what makes it so rewarding. The Great Ocean Road covers a lot of coastline, so the tour is designed to be completed within 12 hours. The advantage of going private is that you can travel at your pace within that window — spending longer at the places you love, keeping stops shorter when you’re happy to keep moving, and building in breaks when you need them. Longer lunches or eat on the go, every group is different.
A private tour means the vehicle and guide are exclusively for your group — no strangers joining. It’s ideal for couples who want their own space, families travelling with children, or groups of friends who want to experience the day together at their own pace.
Yes — and we highly recommend it if you’d like a more relaxed pace. An overnight Great Ocean Road itinerary gives you extra time for scenic stops, short walks, and coastal townships without rushing. If you’re considering this option, it’s best to plan it before you book your Melbourne accommodation, so we can build the two-day route around your preferred overnight location and timing. Contact our office to make an enquiry.
There are plenty of great options — your guide will recommend the best lunch stop on the day based on timing, weather, and what you feel like (quick bite vs relaxed sit-down). Most private Great Ocean Road day tours typically stop for food in one of these towns: Lorne – great cafés and casual lunch spots (perfect if you want an earlier lunch). Apollo Bay – one of the most popular mid-route lunch bases with lots of choice (cafés, bakery, pub/brewery style).
The Great Ocean Road (B100) starts in the surf town of Torquay and finishes in Allansford, near Warrnambool.
For your safety, this tour must be completed within 12 hours. The Great Ocean Road covers a large distance, so driver fatigue is carefully managed and we build scheduled rest breaks into every itinerary for our team. The good news is that within the 12-hour window, a private tour still gives you flexibility — we can adjust the pacing and stops to suit your interests while keeping the day safe and compliant. If you’d like more time, we recommend a multi-day Great Ocean Road tour (with an overnight stay) for a more relaxed pace and extra experiences.
Because with Australian Journeys, you’re not just hiring a driver — you’re getting a professional host and local guide who enhances the whole day. We pride ourselves on genuine customer service, expert advice, and local knowledge. Private touring also means your day is responsive to your group: we read the mood, adjust the pace, skip stops that don’t interest you, and substitute better options when it makes sense — all while keeping the itinerary safe and within the 12-hour touring window.
We use comfortable, late-model, air-conditioned vehicles matched to your group size. For smaller groups we typically use an 8-seat Kia Carnival — and we don’t pack it out. If you’re travelling with 2–5 guests, you’ll have plenty of space to spread out and stay comfortable throughout the day. For larger groups (generally 6+ guests) we use a 12-seat commuter bus for extra room and a more relaxed ride. Your exact vehicle will be confirmed in your itinerary based on group size, comfort, luggage needs, and availability.
We offer door-to-door pick-up and drop-off from your nominated address in Melbourne (CBD and most inner suburbs). Just provide your exact pick-up location when booking, and we’ll confirm the final pick-up time in your itinerary.
